Christmas Day on the Golden Circle

Pictures are at the bottom...

Christmas Day, a day to get up, check your stocking, open presents, and sit around all day eating. Swimming maybe, or making sandcastles.

Depends where you are of course. I was in Iceland, and woke up to, surprisingly, a dusting of snow! It had been 6-8°C the few days before, and now a few days after it's 8°C again. But snow it did. Mike, Anastassia and I were headed out on the golden circle for the day. With such a whistlestop tour, it was pretty much the only day to see any country.

Quite different to mike's tour in the summer, this trip was quiet, and full of changeable weather. It is iceland after all :)

Þingvellir, which I normally don't really find all that beautiful was looking stunning in the dawn light. While were there, the sun rose, a snowstorm came over, and then the sun poked out again.

Pleasant driving out to Gullfoss, where we slipped and slided along the track, couldn't get nearly as close to the water in these conditions, ice sheets on all the rocks. We did have fun throwing rocks into partially frozen ponds though and looking at the airbubbles running under the ice.

Geysir afterwards, which is always nice. Barely an icelander in sight, just tourists and foreign residents making the most of the free days. This time, unlike in the summer, I actually had camera batteries left! Strokkur was spouting a lot less predictably than in the summer, and gave Mike a good dousing just before we left.
