Got up and decided to go up and check out this Bay to Breakers thing we'd heard about the day before. Got to the city late, and had no idea what it really was, otherwise we might have paid up (it's a fundraiser for inner city youth amongst other things) and done the whole walk. (The whole walk is about 7 miles or so) Definitely plan on making a better showing next year. Met it about halfway, and quickly decided to join in and see what happened at the end. (not a lot by the time we got there) Stopped at some garage sales on the way back to the car, then headed up across the bridge to Marin and on to Stinson Beach.
Typical SF weather. Hot in the city for the walk, cloudy and windy by the pacific at the finish, foggy going across the bridge, cloudy but warm on Stinson Beach, warm and sunny on the Mountain, then foggy again back across the bridge clearing as we got further south again.
Sat on Stinson Beach for a while, Still plenty of people considering the weather. I went off to look at some boulders, in theory I was meeting up with the yet to be named Helicopter Chris Hohman for some climbing, but this beach was too far north. Found some guys bouldering though. We (Mike, Marie and I) got bored and went to head home, but the traffic heading south down highway 1 gave us other thoughts. On a bit of a whim, with a rumour of a back road over the hill to mill valley, we headed north. Cruised up past Bodega Bay (apparently a prime shark-eat-seal/human) venue, then turned up onto an unmarked hill road heading in roughly the right direction. Lovely winding hill driving with increasingly good views as we got above the fog quite quickly.
Stopped by the side of the road and chatted to two guys sitting by their ute drinking. Apparently quite a few car ads are filmed a bit higher up, where the trees give way to rolling grass and a winding blacktop. They also gave us directions to take to head back to mill valley.
Shot off a side road to get up to Mt Tamalpais, which has a military observatory and also an excellent lookout over all the northern bay area, from Marin and Sausolito, around Berkeley and Oakland, down both sides of the bay. Weather prevented us from seeing right back to San Jose. Then it was back down the hill and into the fog home again.
