Pine Canyon - Mt Diablo
One fine day, Scott and I decided to go for a look at some of the longer routes in Pine Canyon, further into Mt Diablo state park. (Further into for us, it's in the northern part of the park, and the walk in is substantially longer (though still not that long really)) We actually parked in the wrong place, and had a quite lengthy walk, and saw about all there is to see out there really. We didn't even find the climb we were trying to find in the end, though the party of three we met out there managed to find theirs, and they were on their first trip out of the gym. Much kudos to them. (God knows why they chose pine canyon for their first out of gym experience, but that's cool.) We did eventually end up top-roping a nice looking overhanging featured wall that had some crazy looking old button heads on it (it also appeared to be a wall not covered in our guide (Thornburg's "Bay area rock") It was on the shady side of the large boulder near the aztec head. (The topo in Thornburgs guide made very little sense to us) The rock was loose, and we didn't feel like working it, (It was just on the hard side for us, and would have been rewarding to work) given that were were topping it on one of my half ropes we'd brought for "Caves Route" Oh well. We ended up playing pool and drinking beer in a lovely place in Berkeley.
