Menninganótt is "Night of Arts" which basically means that for the whole day, every gallery, garage band, chamber group, man, woman and child packs downtown reykjavik, participating on both sides. Stages set up everywhere, with all sorts of music. Bar's like Sirkus, normally with a fairly solid indie-rock crowd, full of grandmums, kids in prams. People perfoming in their garages, people turning their appartments into an art gallery for the day. Bands everywhere.
Then fireworks, and then more partying throughout the night.
What else to say. At Sirkus, I saw Benni Hemm Hemm, which were superb, and featured a Tenorhorn even! I've not seen one of them being played in years. I saw some crazy ghetto hip hop set up on a stage in the dirt. I saw a blacksmith working on a coal fired forge in the middle of the street. I saw ambient electronic music on the floor of a cathedral. I saw baroque chamber music at the other end of the same church. I saw psy-trance with strobe lights and blacklights in a tent in the pouring rain. I saw hundreds and hundreds of wet happy icelanders partying in the rain and the night. I saw a stupid norwegian try to fight his way into a bar, and wonder why he wasn't allowed in. I met a strange german icelandic girl asking where she might find some americans, soldiers preferably.
I came home and slept all day, and then put some pictures on line.
