Walking on Stóri-Meitill with Wolfgang

Pictures are at the bottom...

Exercise time! Monday night Wolfgang and I headed out to Stóri-Meitill, just across the road from Lambafell, where I'd been the Sunday prior. Only a couple from the book left. (Still a few not in the book, particularly along Reykjanes, but let's try and keep it simple)

Balmy 17°C or so, though a bit cloudy. Stóri-Meitill is a good bit chunkier than Lambafell, and was full of surprises. We had a good time walking up admiring all the various shapes and forms of the moberg, and then after traipsing up and along a shelf, came to where we could see the mountain proper rising up. And the fairly deep unexpected pit of Stóridalur to our left. We continued along, and chose to ascend the gentle ridge rather than scramble up the fairly steep looking scree, and were rewarded with some lovely late light right out to the Westmann Islands, and Myrdalsjökull.

Cresting the top, we were surprised to hear the roar of the borehols on Hellisheiði so loudly, I thought we had found a fumarole on top of the mountain! Walking around towards the highpoint, we came across yet another unexpected pit! A deep hole, right in the top of the mountain. Full of surprises. We got some great views out towards the power plant at Stóra-Reykjafell and the local area, and stopped for a break with muffins and donuts before heading down again.

The sun was doing it's damndest to try and put on a proper sunset, despite the clouds, and treated us to a couple of nice lightshows on the way back down. 1hr15 or so up, 1hr down.
