Reykjadalur and Grænadalur with Wolfgang and Lee

Pictures are at the bottom...

Wolfgang and I had plans on doing some hiking on Saturday afternoon, after Wolfgang had wrapped up some work. Lee was headed off for the summer, working in Scandinavia, and had never been out to Reykjadalur before, so we combined all plans, and headed out for a stroll in our local park, Iceland.

The plan was to try the Hveragerði approach, to compare with our prior approaches over the heath. It's ok, you get a waterfall, and a longer stroll through the valley, but less of the dramatic entrance you get dropping in off the heath. Only marginally longer, and much better signposted, so far far easier if you don't know where you're going :)

We had a lovely swim and relax in the river, skipping stones, chatting and soaking. Rather than just boringly returning the way we came, we took the path less travelled. We headed up to the hut on the hill, which it turns out is free and open year round, courtesy of the power company, Orkuveitar Reykjavikur. How very nice of them. Around here I started noticing slugs. Then more slugs. and more and more and more and more. They were everywhere. All sizes, from 2cm to 5cm and everything in between. I'd never noticed them there before, but I guess they always had been?

In the spirit of things I'd not noticed before, was all the wool. Though this was definitely not there earlier, as that's definitely seasonal. I don't think I'll ever get used to seeing sheep just naturally shedding wool. It comes off in chunks, and makes them look rather odd. And when they've still got it all, it's incredibly shaggy. Nothing like australian sheep habits :)

Grænadalur, the next valley east of Reykjadalur was fabulous. New sights, and much prettier. Not as good for swimming however :)

After a beautiful evening stroll, with just us and the sheep, we arrived back at the car, and rolled back into town. Mission accomplished.
