Blue skies in Hnappadalur

Pictures are at the bottom...

After a fairly damp week spent mostly inside hiding from the rain, on friday night the wind returned, bringing with it stars and the promise of a clear day. Still, I ended up sleeping in late anyway :) I wanted to go somewhere I hadn't been for a while, so I headed out towards snæfellsnes to see about climbing a mountain.

The sun was bright, the sky was blue, but boy did I get out of the house late :) The moutain I'd planned on climbing, Tröllakirkja, had it's hed in the clouds, and snow on it's upper reaches, and I decided that at the time of day, and with no-one even knowing where I was, that an ascent would surely be a fools errand. Beautiful though, and now I've scoped the approaches for a couple of other spires in the area as well.

Instead, I found a rather intriguing tourist/walking sign, simply labelled Gullborgarhellar, or Golden City Caves. I could resist that, even though there was really no track, nor even a place to park the car!

So I wondered around in the lava for a while :) I found a couple of lava tubes, but in shiny new goretex, by myself, there was no way I was crawling down any lava tubes. I'm sure the place was covered in caves, but with the sun fading fast, I headed back out of the moss and the lava, and pointed homewards. So pleasant to stretch the legs without getting dripping wet :)
